Breaking Down The Cast Of Characters In Search Of The MVP Of Westworld Season 1

[Credit: Getty Images]When we were figuring out who which character was the MVP of Season 1, we took a few things into account. First, we looked at an individual character’s impact on the show (story/reception). Secondly, their likability/popularity with the fan base – which we explored through social media. Lastly, we looked at the performance by the actor portraying the character. Using these criteria, we broke the field down to 5 potential characters – which are listed below in no particular order:

  • Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood)
  • Bernard (Jeffrey Wright)
  • Maeve (Thandie Newton)
  • Dr. Robert Ford (Sir Anthony Hopkins)
  • William (Jimmi Simpson)

Each of these five characters was a pivotal part of the show’s first season, but it’s much more than that. Each actor who portrayed one these characters brought something special to the role. Anthony Hopkins brought an unwavering gravitas to Dr. Ford that dominated each scene. Evan Rachel Wood somehow captured the benign innocence of a child in her portrayal of Dolores. But, at the drop of a hat, could also shake the ground with an imposing confidence.

Jimmi Simpson brought a charming boyish presence to William, but also broke our hearts when he donned his black hat. Jeffrey Wright played the heartbroken father extremely well. Only for Bernard to be crushed under the weight of the realization that he was a host the whole time. Each character/cast member is an all-star, but there can only be one. Without further ado, let’s look at the MVP from Westworld Season 1.

Maeve Is The Reigning MVP Of Westworld Season 1

Thandie Newton’s portrayal of Maeve was a revelation. No question about it, she was the breakout star of the first season – and for good reason. Her dynamic performance anchored a character that ran the gamut of emotions, but she was also tethered to the audience’s hearts. We cheered for her when she broke free of the park, but understood her decision to go back to find her daughter. We followed her on her journey intently, waiting each week to see how the character evolved.

Sure, Maeve’s storyline ran separate from the core plot, but at the same time, it was just as compelling. The credit goes to both Netwon and the Westworld writing staff, who helped bring a powerful character to the forefront of an amazing show. Hopefully, Maeve will be a huge part of future seasons of the show. But, for now, she’s the reigning MVP of Westworld Season 1.
