Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (Gregor Clegane) teases Game of Thrones season 8
By Dan Selcke
Gregor “the Mountain” Clegane has been with Game of Thrones since the beginning, appearing in every season save the third. He’s been recast a few times, with Icelandic actor Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson establishing himself as the definitive version of the character after he squeezed poor Oberyn Martell’s eyes out of his head in season 4’s “The Mountain and the Viper.” Now that the show is winding down, Gregor’s fate is up in the air, along with the rest of the characters. Will we see much him come season 8?
“I certainly hope so!” Björnsson told Express when the outlet chatted with him about the final episodes, which are filming now. Unfortunately, that’s about as specific as Björnsson would get. He refused to say if Gregor will finally square off against his younger brother Sandor “the Hound” Clegane, or who will sit on the Iron Throne when all is said and done, although he’s pulling for Cersei Lannister, “[b]ecause she is my queen but also a very interesting and complex character.”
Unsurprisingly, Björnsson named the Mountain’s fight with Oberyn as his favorite moment so far, and said of season 8 only that “It is going to be awesome!” We’re certainly not going to call him wrong.
The point of the interview is so Björnsson can publicize yet another bizarre commercial he shot for SodaStream, which makes a line of home carbonation products. They just keep getting odder. Have a watch:
Now that you’ve seen a guy nervously shave the front of Björnsson’s lower leg while the Icelandic strongman glowers down at him, don’t you want some sparkling water?
