What’s Up With That Wolf Roaming Around Westworld?
We’ve seen a lone wolf roaming around Westworld, but what is its significance? Could it have a deeper meaning?
Carnage and mayhem were key components of the story throughout Westworld Season 1. The guest slaughtered the hosts, the host killed other hosts, and Dolores’ revolution turned the tables entirely. We’ve seen several massacres over the course of the show, and based on the latest trailer, Season 2 will continue the trend.
There is, however, one strange thing that happens after the fact. We are, of course, talking about the lone wolf who can be seen at the scene of every massacre. So, what is the wolf doing? Could it a harbinger of death? Is it controlled remotely? Is it a host? There are several theories surrounding the wolf, but it’s hard to say what its significance is. Let’s look at one of the more popular theories and try to decipher what’s up with that damn wolf.

What’s Up With That Wolf Roaming Around Death And Destruction In Westworld?
In
Westworld
Season 1, the wolf would appear mostly in Dolores and Teddy’s flashbacks. In the
Westworld Season 2 Super Bowl trailer
, however, it appeared in the aftermath of Ford’s narrative unveiling party. We can assume, with some certainty, that the wolf is symbolic. The show’s co-creators, Jonathon Nolan and Lisa Joy, inject symbolism and repetition into also every episode.
This adds to the lore of the show, but it also creates a world where everything has a deeper meaning. With that in mind, it’s obvious that the wolf represents something bigger than the death it’s drawn to. It might, and probably is, connected to a single character or ideal. In this case, Dolores and sentience. Let’s look at the strongest theory we’ve heard so far.
Could The Wolf Be A Symbol Of Sentience?
Out of all the theories we’ve seen, the following from Reddit user Spock_Nipples seems to be the most logical. This Redditor draws a connection between Westworld and Native American mythology. Forgoing the users interesting nom de plume, their theory makes a lot of sense. Their entry on Reddit reads as follows:
"The show draws heavily on Native American symbolism and mythology. Operating from that perspective, Wolf symbolizes strength, truth, loyalty, intelligence, leadership, and awareness of self. Does that last sound familiar? Sentience? Wolves also mate for life, so there is a possible link to the Teddy/Dolores connection- I have a running theory that those two are linked on more than a romantic level; that they share an operational duality as a function of their existence. From that, I think we can entertain the idea that Wolf is Dolores’ spirit animal."
The Redditor’s theory is sound and lines up with everything we know. The wolf only appears after a host goes on a rampage. These rampages are usually preceded by a glimpse of sentience. Dolores seems to be tied to the wolf in some way, and based on what we know, their connection seems to be acts of sentience. Hopefully, we will learn about the wolf’s significance in the future. But, for now, the Redditor’s theory is the most plausible.
