Bernard will be “torn between two worlds” in Westworld Season 2
At SXSW 2018, Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy commented on Bernard’s loyalties heading into Season 2.
As we head into Westworld Season 2, one thing is clear: Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) is a wild card. Dolores and Maeve have obvious agendas, but we have no idea where Bernard’s loyalties lie. Sure, it’s easy to assume that he’ll side with the hosts, but nothing on Westworld is ever that simple.
By the end of Westworld Season 1, he was still coming to grips with his own existence. He knows he’s a host, but it seems like part of him is still believes he’s human. He’s also recovering from his last encounter with Dr. Ford before Maeve brought him back online. The term “head trauma” undersells it a bit, since he shot himself in the head. But, it’s bound to affect his mindset in Season 2.
So, now that Dolores has drawn a line in the sand, where will Bernard find himself? Will he ally himself with the the robot revolutionaries or take up arms against his fellow hosts? Thanks to a recent interview, we have a better idea at what to expect from Bernard in Westworld Season 2.

Lisa Joy said Bernard will be “torn between two worlds” in Westworld Season 2
At SXSW 2018, Deadline caught up with Jeffrey Wright for an exclusive interview. We learned a lot from the Westworld panel and cast interview, but Wright’s interview gave us a lot of insight into Bernard’s mindset in Season 2. During the interview he talked about his character’s allegiances and what we can expect from Bernard in Season 2 (you can see the whole video interview above):
"“He’s got some cognitive challenges as we enter the first episodes of season 2 and he has additional challenges that come up as he goes on board in terms of him being able to process… Bernard is in a pretty peculiar, kind of unique position in that he’s got certain allegiances to both sides and I think that’s part of the consideration for him. I think given his robot brain situation and given kind of the social situation around him in terms of having been human and then discovering he’s a host, but he’s aspiring to kind of an awakening as the hosts are, the question for him at the beginning as you might expect is: ‘Where am I? Where am I in all of this?’ We lead from there.”"
We previously posited that Bernard would be an extremely important character in the show’s second season. He knows all the players on both sides of the aisle, and as of now, he hasn’t chosen a side. We also don’t know how much of Arnold is still inside his head. Wright dances around any spoilers, but he basically confirms what we already assumed.
Bernard’s allegiances might be up in the air, but he’s looking for a place to belong. His skill set and knowledge make him extremely valuable and he’ll be a huge asset to either side. One thing is for sure, Bernard’s journey will certainly be a fascinating element of Westworld Season 2.
