Kristian Nairn (Hodor) hypes Game of Thrones season 8: “You are going to be ‘very’ surprised”

Kristian Nairn, who played everyone’s favorite duo-syllabic giant Hodor for five seasons on Game of Thrones, recently took part in an hour-long panel at the Middle East Film & Comic Con in Dubai. Naturally, he was asked plenty of questions about Game of Thrones, and shocked the audience when he revealed that — horror of horrors — he hasn’t read the Song of Ice and Fire books and nor does he plan to.

"I wouldn’t say I was a fan of the series when I was offered the role. I’m really lazy and I just never made the time or the effort to get into it. Also, my mother is a huge fan and a reader. So, for almost four years our dinner conversations were about what happens in the books and she would give me all the spoilers. And now that I’m done with the the series, I know that I’m never going to read them. I know I’m being terrible."

It’s okay, Nairn. We’ll forgive you as long you drop a juicy sound bite about season 8. More on that later.

Nairn also talked about his friendship with Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark), whom he carried around for untold hours in front of the camera. “The first day I met him, he smashed my iPhone. And I knew we had something special,” Nairn said. “He was just the clumsiest child. And I say this to his face, that he’s a very smart kid but he’s not very streetwise. Like he wouldn’t know how to open a can of Red Bull, but he’d get straight A’s on all his exams. It’s almost annoying.”

Finally, Nairn tossed a bit of season 8 hype our way. Sure, his character is dead, but if Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) can talk to his former castmates and tease what happens next on the show, why not Nairn?

"It’s going to be absolutely mind-blowing. You are going to be ‘very’ surprised."

Or worse: what if Nairn is in season 8, and we’re going to have to deal with a rotting Hodor wight come next year? I don’t think my heart could take it.

Anyway, the Middle East Film & Comic Con runs through tomorrow at the Dubai World Trade Center in…Dubai. There’s no word on if Nairn is going to show up at this year’s Con of Thrones, which goes down in Dallas in May, but with the way the guest list has been inflating lately, it’s certainly possible.
