Joe Dempsie (Gendry): The ending to Game of Thrones isn’t what fans expect
Joe Dempsie (Gendry) has been giving a lot of interviews lately in support of his new show, Deep State, and dropping plenty of knowledge about Game of Thrones season 8 in the process. Speaking to Metro, Dempsie cautioned fans not to put too much stock in theories about how the show will end.
"I’m sure [showrunners] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] don’t pay too much attention to people’s theories and speculation there is all over the internet, but it would be a bit of an anti-climax if a well-popularised theory turned out to be the way it ended. There’s many pitfalls and I think they really have achieved that with this. It’s an ending I don’t think many people will be expecting and I think, on reflection, people will really, really enjoy."
He qualified this tease by saying, “That’s if I know the ending at all.” Oh, Joe, you kidder.
Dempsie’s comments remind us of what Kristian Nairn (Hodor) said when he was talking about Game of Thrones at the Middle East Film & Comic Con in Dubai. “It’s going to be absolutely mind-blowing. You are going to be ‘very’ surprised.” Considering how thorough Game of Thrones theorists can get, we’d be surprised if no one had guessed at least a part of the ending, but if the show can surprise the bulk of us, good on it.
Meanwhile, Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth) has said that the ending will be “bittersweet” while Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) has assured fans that it “definitely will not be rushed.” But at the end of the day, we don’t know what we’re in for come season 8, thanks in part to HBO stepping up its security measures and preventing wide-scale leaks. But whatever twists and turns are coming in season 8, Dempsie has hinted that Gendry will have a sizable part to play, or at least, a bigger part than he had in season 7. Beats rowing.
