Westworld Season 1: Re-watching raises more questions – Part 2
By Renay
Part 2 – I decided to re-watch Westworld Season 1 to prep my brain for season 2. I’m starting to think it was a mistake. I have more questions than ever!
In part 1 of this article series I asked questions raised while re-watching Westworld Season 1, Episode 1. I won’t be going episode by episode because my brain, and yours, will implode. Season 2 is launching tomorrow on HBO at 9PM est. and as we said on our Twitter page, “We. Are. So. Ready.”
Q4: Why does the Native American turn into William a.k.a. The Main in Black?
In episode 2, Chestnut, we see Maeve get attacked by a group of Native Americans. Maeve and her daughter hide inside their shanty. Maeve prepares for the inevitable. We see the native walk by the windows and when the door opens, it’s William. This is her nightmare. Her subconscious or previous configuration, putting it together? Why would William purposely hunt Maeve down?
Q5: Did Dolores or the Delos executives make ‘Odyssey on Red River’ happen?
In the Westworld Season 1 finale Dolores kills Ford, effectively ending his control over the park. Dolores’ self-awareness leads to taking action, but she’d have no idea Ford shut down the ‘Odyssey on Red River’ adventure. As someone who’s worked for very large corporations, this made me think of the Delos board of directors. Executive Director of the board, Charlotte, states she’s only interested in the intellectual property. “The code”.
Charlotte was working with Theresa to transmit data out of the park. They used the updates glitch in an attempt to humiliate Ford into quitting. Ford, like most doctors, has a God complex. He wouldn’t see errors as mistakes. I can see him quoting Charles M. Schulz – “I never made a mistake in my life. I thought I did once, but I was wrong.”

If Charlotte has access to programming the hosts, even in a small capacity, she could be manipulating all sorts of changes from outside the park. I’m looking forward to seeing more Charlotte in season 2.
Q6: Can you rent-a-host for personal use?
Speaking of Charlotte, in Westworld Season 1, we see her in a modern suite thoroughly enjoying Hector. I’m guessing the hosts don’t have a fail safe built in that disables them if they stray from the park. In the AMC show Humans, they also have humanoid synthetics. Unless they’re purchased for at-home use, the synthetics explode outside a designated perimeter.
How does this rent-a-host thing work? Do you call the concierge desk and have one delivered? (Best room service EVER, by the way.) Why did Charlotte chose Hector in particular? There’s something going on here. It’s no one-off either. Enter Logan.
We will be seeing Logan in a similar situation thanks to the Season 2 trailer. We only get a glimpse but you can see the orgy is over, Logan’s passed out on the bed and it’s taken place in a modern looking bedroom. Cut to a beautiful blond putting her bra back on. Yeah, she’s definitely a host.
Would any of you take advantage of this service if it was offered? I sure the hell would.
Q7: Who is Bernard’s wife really?
In episode 3, we see Bernard talking to his wife on a screen in a public computer area. Interesting that a high status employee doesn’t have a private office to chat in. As we now know, he’s not human. What purpose does the expanded illusion of Bernard’s wife serve?
Next: Westworld creators talk about equal nudity for men and women in the series
These questions, and more to come, were raised from watching Westworld Season 1. Can you imagine what we’re in for in Season 2?! As Thandie Newton said at Tribeca on April 19th, “Just you f*cking wait, man – “.
