Westworld Season 1: Re-watching raises more questions – Part 3
By Renay
Part 3 – I decided to re-watch Westworld Season 1 to prep my brain for season 2. I’m starting to think it was a mistake. I have more questions than ever!
In part 1 and 2 of this 3 Part article series, I asked questions raised while re-watching Westworld Season 1. I won’t be going episode by episode because my brain, and yours, will implode. I invite fans to let me know what they think by leaving a comment below or contacting me on Twitter.
Q8: Delos. De los what?
When I first saw the name Delos, I thought to myself: “De los what?”. I was born in Puerto Rico. I saw the word as two syllables. Spanish to English translation? De los = Of the. “Of the what?!”. This is more of a silly aside than a questions but feel free to chime in on what you think of it. Westworld is such a heavy show, I enjoy finding humor in it when I can. Logan does have some lines that are pretty damn funny though. “How do you feel, hmm? Little tight in the pants?” Hahah!
Q9: Is the vulture a metaphor?
This may as well be a rhetorical question. The Season 2 promotional material released features a vulture. In Episode 4, Teddy is tied up to a tree while a vulture perches above, waiting for him to die. Perhaps in Season 2 it’s not only the hosts who join the chaos. In the Season 2 trailer, we see an incomplete animal (a bison?) charging at a security guard. There goes my theory that one hosts telling another “These violent delights have violent ends” triggers their previous configuration and/or self-awareness.
For good measure, here are some interesting facts on vultures. No, seriously. They’re cool.
Q10: Are the Native American hosts already self-aware?
In episode 4, Maeve watches a group of natives walk through the center of town. A child drops a figurine carved in the image of a member of the ‘clean-up crew’ she’s aware of existing. A man tells her the figurine is part of their religion. As we’ve seen in a flashback/nightmare, Natives have tried to kill Maeve and her daughter.
We know they’re part of the Odyssey on Red River adventure and will be featured next season. In the trailer for Season 2, a native finds a naked Logan under a tree. We see them often enough throughout the season, but not enough to speculate too deeply on their level of importance.
Q11: What area is being ‘terraformed’ for the new narrative & how does Ford stop time?
California was part of the Mexican empire during the 1800’s. The California Gold Rush soon followed. This easily explains why Ford and Theresa are among a field of agave, lunching in a Mexican restaurant with a shot of tequila being poured. Theresa recounts she came here with her parents and sat at one of those very tables. Ford stops time during this scene. How? He’s not holding a tablet or anything.

It’s like spending the entire day, and part of your evening, at Disney World or Busch Gardens. You had so much fun but your legs ache, your head is spinning and by 9PM, you can barely hold your eyes open. You need a serious break the next day. A place to relax, go to the pool, sunbathe, maybe get a spa treatment. Was this Mexican-style area of the park an on-site resort or hotel?
Next: Westworld creators talk about equal nudity for men and women in the series
This isn’t a question. Just an observation.
When Felix is trying to revive the bird he says “Come on, little one.” This is a nod to Jurassic Park’s baby raptor being born scene. I was wondering if the disturbing, wild animal sounds the, what I call, berserkers make are also a nod to the movie. They sound an awful lot like juvenile T-Rex’s to me. Yes, of course I know what a teenage T-Rex sounds like. Don’t you?
This was Westworld Season 1. Can you imagine what we’re in for in Season 2?! As Thandie Newton said at Tribeca on April 19th, “Just you f*cking wait, man – “.
