We open with a stunning view the ‘real’ world, Dolores in a little black dress and Bernard at her side. We hear Ford speaking to Bernard about not playing favorites. He feels Dolores still isn’t ready to be put into action but Ford disagrees. We get a glimpse of a younger Ford in the window’s reflection. The park and it’s creations are still in a testing phase. A Beta version if you will. As Dolores looks out at the city she says: “It looks like the stars have been scattered across the ground. Have you ever seen anything so full of splendor?”.
Bernard takes Dolores on a walk through the city (which looks Tokyo-esque) and over to the large construction site of his home. A hint about Bernard’s wife is dropped. She has influence over him. Not much is know about her yet and whether or not she is real or another one of Ford’s constructs. He tells Dolores his wife feels he ‘lives in the park’ and he wishes to have his work and home lives within reach of each other.
During the tour Dolores looks upon the city and again says the line again. ‘Have you ever seen anything so full of splendor?’ This confirms to Bernard that she isn’t ready yet. He also says he feels that humans, perhaps, aren’t deserving of such beauty. The ‘splendor’ line is repeated throughout the episode by different characters. It may be this season 2’s ‘violent delights’.
Meanwhile, in sector19’s remote refurbishment outpost, technicians are desperately trying to keep up with the the mass of bodies coming in for repair. A guest, who we saw in episode one brings them up to speed and tells them it’s a slaughter out there. The room’s door opens to reveal the lethal duo that is Angela and Dolores. Teddy’s there too. The ladies are completely devoid of emotion as they charge in and immediately take control of the room.
But poor Teddy. Teddy’s just a boy in love and doesn’t know what Dolores does bout his existence. Always a gentleman, ready to defend Dolores’ honor, but not taking a particularly active role in killing and interrogation. Dolores shows Teddy his own file on a tablet and opens his eyes to what the truth is about them. Why they were created. He is rightfully stunned and hurt.
Throughout the episode we learn a lot of strategic information about the park from Dolores and Angela torturing the remaining members of the tech team. The white substance used to create the hosts apparently burns human skin. We learn there are 800 Confederados the western sector. Teddy says at most they have 50. In order to fight for control over the park, they realize they’ll need allies. Dolores states, then “we will have them”. She also asks to wake up a particular Confederado who’s lifeless body is tossed in a bin with another man. He has a new job to do.
We see Lawrence in a bind. Again. Hanging is this guy’s middle name. William comes up to help him out of his predicament. Again. These guys are an unlikely but highly entertaining duo. I feel they give the show brief moments of levity. As William kills off the last of the men that were about to do ol’ Lawrence in, he says the man was dead. William says that dead isn’t what it used to be. Ain’t that the truth?
As awful as William is, he seems to have a smidge of respect for Lawrence. Even when Lawrence asks him why should he help him. William replies that it’s in his nature. William says the stakes at the park haven’t been real up to this point, so he’s going to fight his way back, repeal the verdict and burn the whole thing to the ground. They make a plan to go through Pariah.
The scene involving Logan, Angela and Akecheta is so delicious I’m leaving it for another article. The first 30 minutes folks! I’ll be back with the second half of the episode recap tomorrow!
