Syfy has released a teaser for its upcoming series Nightflyers, which is based on A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin’s 1985 novella of the same name. The show is set in 2093 and follows the misadventures of a group of scientists and a telepath who set out on an expedition to deep space aboard their ship, the Nightflyer.

Their mission is to make contact with a mysterious alien lifeform. “As they race towards first contact, terrifying and violent events begin to occur, causing the once tight-knit crew to mistrust each other. It’s not long before their main mission becomes survival.” Here’s the teaser:

“From the mind of George R.R. Martin.” Sell it, Syfy. Sell it like you’re going out of business.

Martin does have an executive producer credit on the show, but he won’t be involved in production. Even if he wanted to be, his contract with HBO prevents him with working with other networks. Brian Nelson, Mike Cahill and Andrew McCarthy are also serving as executive producers on the show. Jeff Buhler is serving as showrunner. Here’s the cast list:

  • Gretchen Mol (Mozart in the Jungle) as Agatha Matheson
  • Eoin Macken (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter) as Karl D’Branin
  • David Ajala (Doctor Who, Black Box) as Roy Eris
  • Sam Strike (Mindhunter) as Thale
  • Maya Eshet (Teen Wolf) as Lommie
  • Angus Sampson (Shut Eye) as Rowan
  • Jodie Turner-Smith (The Last Ship) as Melantha Jhirl
  • Brían F. O’Byrne (The Magicians) as Auggie

Also, because we should never pass up an opportunity to do this, here’s the trailer for the original, rather campy-looking Nightflyers movie, which came out in 1987.

Man, even back then they were using Martin’s name to promote stuff. Anyway, Syfy’s Nightflyers premieres this fall.
