Westworld, and lead character Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) is having quite a year. In the first season, Dolores, a robot host, maintained a positive attitude even as she was killed and raped time and again by many of the park’s guests, some of whose tastes ran darker than others, and then rebooted without any memory of what happened…or so the programmers at Delos Destinations thought. At the end of the season, she became fully self-aware and quickly set to killing the human guests in the park, often brutally. And she’s not done by a long shot, killing hosts and humans alike as she searches for freedom.
Some fans haven’t taken to the new, vengeful Dolores, and Wood has rushed to the character’s defense:
For my money, Evan Rachel Wood is absolutely right. To take the example of the Man in Black, he’s done some despicable things to the hosts, including raping Dolores in the series premiere, but some fans are willing to excuse his actions because he’s only ever directly harmed hosts.
Dolores, who’s suffered the consequences of that unthinking perspective for decades, is revolting against it.
In season 1, it is revealed that Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) was the one behind the host uprising. His thinking is that the hosts had to experience pain to truly be free, and Dolores — as the oldest host in the park — has experienced more pain than anyone.
I wonder if there was a time when Game of Thrones stars debated the show so openly on Twitter — at this point, they may all be too afraid of dropping spoilers. Anyway, what do you guys think of Wood’s arguments?
