Season 8 filming: Game of Thrones returns to Magheramorne Quarry

Magheramorne Quarry is one of several places the Game of Thrones production has filmed scenes for season 8. Long the location of the Castle Black set, the Northern Irish site has seen a ton of activity this year. The production erected an absolutely enormous green screen in the area and paraded all kinds of fascinating things in front of it, including [SPOILER][SPOILER][SPOILER], and [SPOILER], and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It’s a happening place.

Without giving too much away, it looks like the shoot at Magheramorne Quarry will be part of a major battle against the army of the dead to take place at Winterfell. (We’re guessing it goes down in Episode 3, given that “Hardhome” and “Battle of the Bastards” director Miguel Sapochnik is handling that one.) The production spent weeks in front of that green screen and seemed to have gotten everything it needed by early April. Now, however, a few new tents have gone up onsite, so it looks like the cameras will roll on Magheramorne again.

Is the crew returned to film more of this elaborate battle sequence, or is it just picking up some shots it missed before? Given that filming on season 8 is winding down (Lena Headey put the end of shooting somewhere near the end of June), I’m guessing it’s the latter, but with this production, you can never be sure. We’ll keep watching.
