Aegon’s Conquest is a Game of Thrones-themed board game created by fans C.S. Ross and Andy Kotch and published by Defy Danger. It’s a megagame, meaning the rules are very complex and you need a lot of people to play it; at least 33, in the case of this game. As the name implies, Aegon’s Conquest finds players, who divide into eight groups of four, playing as different houses during Aegon’s Invasion, the seminal event in Westerosi history where Aegon Targaryen united Westeros under a single rule: his. But in this game, it doesn’t have to be end up that way. Using diplomacy, backstabbing, tactics and role-playing, one team comes out on top and claims Westeros as its own.

Recently, a group of Finnish Game of Thrones set the record the biggest board game played in Finland when they gave Aegon’s Conquest a spin at GameXpo Helsinki. There were 33 in all, plus four game masters, and they came prepared. “Megagames are a new trend amongst board gamers,” said Finnish Board Game Society chairman, who helped organize the event. “It was awesome to be able to bring one to Finland. Compared to previous Aegon’s Conquest sessions abroad, our Finnish players put a lot of time and effort into dressing up for their roles.”
In this particular round, House Stark emerged the victor. GameXpo had an Iron Throne on loan from HBO, so the winning team celebrated with a well-deserved sit, with the heads of the other families kneeling to the new ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. Below, the four game masters gathered round the throne:
The game was played simultaneously at four different tables (one each for rulers, knights, maesters and heirs) for six hours, and while that’s a long time, this had to make it worth it. “I think the game was a great success,” said Sahlberg. “There is a lot of hype about it already.”
