Lock and load: The Punisher season 2 gets a release date and a new teaser

Lock and load, Punisher fans: the second season of Netflix’s most violent Marvel series is on the horizon. Thanks to a new teaser, we know to clear our schedules on January 18, crack open our favorite adult beverage, and let the mayhem and murder wash over us. Watch below as Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle/The Punisher) unleashes the rage within!

While the teaser doesn’t give us any new footage, we do get a sense of the theme for season 2, as well as a good look at Ben Barnes as the villainous Jigsaw/Billy Russo. It looks like the second season will highlight the pair’s violent tendencies and broken psyches. Season 1 saw Castle beat Russo to a literal pulp, and we’re guessing the latter isn’t going to take to kindly to that. Bullets, blood and violence galore await us. Cinemablend also confirms that Daredevil’s Karen Page, portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll, will play a “huge” part in The Punisher season 2.

Now the bad news: Netflix’s suite of Marvel shows are dropping at a rate that would make Frank Castle blush. The second seasons of Iron Fist and Luke Cage were their last, and Netflix even cancelled Daredevil, the most popular of the bunch, after a magnificent third season. Jessica Jones and The Punisher stand alone now.

We suspect these cancellations have a lot to do with Disney, which owns Marvel, launching its own streaming service — Disney+ — later this year. Happily, The Punisher was made under a different deal than the one that produced Netflix’s other Marvel shows, so it stands a better chance of continuing, at least in theory. And if this is the end for The Punisher, hopefully it’ll go out with a bang or two…hundred.
