Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi voicing IG-88 in The Mandalorian?

Iron Man director Jon Favreau is making a live-action Star Wars show for Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+. It’s called The Mandalorian, it stars Game of Thrones alum Pedro Pascal in the lead role, and Favreau has been giving updates via his Instagram account.

We know the show will take place in between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, and that it’ll follow a lone gunslinger type on the edge of the galaxy. Thanks to Favreau, we also know that it’ll feature a couple of familiar characters from the original Star Wars saga, including fan-favorite bounty hunting droid IG-88, one of many bounty hunters Darth Vader sent looking for the Millennium Falcon in The Empire Strikes Back:

Much like Boba Fett, IG-88 is one of those obscure Star Wars characters that garnered a large fan following after the original trilogy ended, and he got a deeper backstory from the team at Lucasfilm Story Group.

Now that you’re all caught up, thanks to another Instagram post from Favreau, it looks like Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi will voice IG-88 in The Mandalorian. Check it:

Of course, Waititi could be voicing a character looking at IG-88, or just to the side, but sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one. IG-88 hasn’t really had a voice up to now, so it’ll be interesting to hear Waititi’s take.

Waititi directed at least one episode of The Mandlorian, and this wouldn’t be the first time he lend his voice to one of his movies. In Thor: Ragnarok, he voiced the hilarious alien gladiator Korg. Here’s hoping IG-88 is as big a hit:

Hopefully, we’ll learn more about The Mandalorian (and get a trailer) when Star Wars Celebration hits Chicago on April 11. It’s on the schedule, after all.
