Game of Thrones fans … Gwendoline Christie knows.

That’s actually kind of comforting after “The Last of the Starks” raises her so high, then brings her low. She’s a knight of the Seven Kingdoms; she’s survived the Battle of Winterfell. She gets to get together with Jaime Lannister … and then it goes south.

Christie summed it up to Entertainment Weekly: “That’s the Game of Thrones, isn’t it? Just when you think things are going to go well it punches you harder than ever in the guts…”

However, she’s keeping her head high. As the episode made sure to emphasize, she still has something to do. “I love that she doesn’t crumble from it,” Christie said. “She goes back to work. Because she always loves work — that feels refreshing, a woman can be happy without a companion.”

That work is protecting the Stark girls, or at least the one who is still in Winterfell at episode’s end.

She has, in other words, an oath to keep.

But why now for Jaime and Brienne to get it on? “Physicality often releases emotion and I think that’s what happens — working together unlocked them,” Christie said, referring to the battle of Winterfell. Additionally: “I like that she instigated it.” So she does by pushing Jaime’s hand away and starting to undress both him and herself. It’s her option to do so, reclaiming that choice after getting very awkward during the drinking game.

"I went through a whole thought process looking at it from many different angles and thought the writing is very good here. This is what makes a character three dimensional, truly. It gives her the agency to explore all the different elements of her life. She’s not just a woman who can fight incredibly well and doesn’t have any need for anything else. She is a woman, she’s a human, she fights brilliantly, she also has some desire of companionship and sensual love"

And what about Jaime leaving? How did Christie react? “That’s when I went very red. I was very upset and I had to go for a walk.” After taking a look at Twitter, it seems like most of the fanbase seems to be in agreement with her, just without having to take the walk mentioned (yet, anyway).

Whether or not we’ll get to see Brienne take a walk or just throw herself into giving Sansa the best advice she can, whatever Sansa chooses to do, will have to wait until Episodes 5 and 6.
