Jonathan Frakes gives us a production update on Star Trek: Picard

Welcome to the Star Trek renaissance. It all started with CBS All Acess’ Star Trek: Discovery, and after two phenomenal seasons of that show, the streaming service decided to double down and create another Star Trek series. This time, it turned to an old friend from The Next Generation: Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart).

Star Trek: Picard is coming.

Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander William T. Riker in The Next Generation, directed a couple episodes of the first season — Episodes three and four, to be exact. He took to Twitter to announce that his bit is over:

Picard season 1 will have 10 episodes, with five directors helming two each. Episodes 1 and 2 were directed by Hanelle Culpepper, who previously directed episodes of Discovery.

Executive producer Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek: Discovery) told Deadline a little of what we can expect from the show. “A lot has happened to Jean-Luc Picard in the intervening years. He had to deal with some new things, and some old things. Both things collide together and he’s made choices that he’s not necessarily feeling great about.”

So Picard will deal with “things.” Good to know. One of those things may be his Napa Valley winery.

“[S]omething has caused him to leave Star fleet and we will find out a lot more about what happened,” Kurtzman continued. And there you have it

Officially, Star Trek: Picard is set 15-20 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis, and finds him deeply affected by the destruction of planet Romulus, which I suppose is why he went into the family wine business. And that’s a deep cut because yes, I know my Trek.

As far as when Picard will premiere, CBS chief creative officer David Nevins told The Hollywood Reporter that “there is huge anticipation for Picard. That will [premiere] at the end of the year.”

And now you know.
