Avengers: Endgame won’t break Avatar’s all-time box office record…probably

Long before its release, speculation began to build about whether Avengers: Endgame would be able to claim the title of highest grossing film of all time. The movie would certainly be a success, but would it be able to topple Avatar, which has held the title since 2009? For now, that answer appears to be no, although we doubt anyone at Walt Disney is terribly upset.

For starters, the epic superhero crossover did actually break Avatar’s record for continuous release, meaning Endgame was actually more successful during its original theatrical run than was Avatar back in 2009.

The caveat comes when you add in the take from Avatar’s re-release months later in 2010, which brought in an additional $33 million. Coupled with an extra $5 million from a special edition release tagged onto the end of its 2009 run (much like the special extended edition of Endgame that just hit theaters), Avatar is still ahead by approximately $38 million. So close!

Of course, this is Hollywood we are talking about. Just like the superheroes who dominate the box office lately, you can never say die. Disney could decide to re-release Endgame one more time later this year, similar to what Fox did with Avatar. For now, however, Disney can rest easy knowing that it owns the four of the five highest grossing films all time, including Avatar. Not bad, and also a little scary.
