With the Skywalker Saga coming to an end in just a few a months, the Star Wars fandom has been tossing around all sorts of possibilities for what could happen in Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. Everything from a redemption story for Kylo Ren to Rey turning to the Dark Side seems to be on the table.

Meanwhile, director J.J. Abrams is happy to weigh in on these theories. In an interview with MTV News, Abrams touched on some of the bigger questions fans have about the upcoming film.

In regard to the possibility of Kylo Ren turning away from the Dark Side, Abrams didn’t give us anything specific, but implied that Adam Driver is certainly capable of doing justice to a story like that. “With an actor like Adam Driver, you can never limit what that man can do,” Abrams said. “I will say, without talking about redemption or not, he is mind-blowing in this. He’s brought a whole other level to this. I can’t wait for you to see what happens.”

That’s high praise for Driver, and it only makes us more excited to see what he’ll do with his villain role during this final installment. Kylo Ren has always been an incredibly multifaceted character, and whether he “turns good” or not, it’ll be fascinating to see where his character goes after the events of The Last Jedi.

MTV News also asked Abrams about the speculation surrounding Rey going to the Dark Side, particularly after the new footage that dropped during Disney’s D23 Expo earlier this month. Abrams didn’t elaborate much on the footage itself, but did say that he’s had the big ending planned for some time now. Regarding the last shot of the film, Abrams said, “It was a very early on thing, and it’s less the last shot of the movie than the last sequence. And it’s something that I hope you like.”

It looks like we’ll need to wait for the film to hit theaters for more details, but with Emperor Palpatine returning and both Kylo’s and Rey’s fates up in the air, it looks like we’re in for a rollercoaster ride with The Rise of Skywalker.
