The Rise of Skywalker will explore the “nakedness” of Kylo Ren and Rey’s relationship

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters this December, and when it does, it will explore the relationship between Kylo Ren and Rey even more than in The Last Jedi, where the pair shared a couple of tender moments using the Force despite being separated by a great distance. Ben Swolo

And thus the Ben Swolo meme was born.

Anyway, according to co-writer Chris Terrio, we’re going to see much more of that in Rise of Skywalker — the interplay between Rey and Kylo, not Adam Driver shirtless, although that’s possible too. “Some of the most interesting scenes in The Last Jedi are the conversations between Rey and Ren,” Terrio told Empire Magazine. “We’ve tried to pick up that complicated relationship that really has been present ever since the interrogation in Episode VII.”

"When Ren takes off his mask, there’s a nakedness about him with Rey that he doesn’t express to anyone else. Rian developed that in fascinating ways and we’ve been able to develop it even further."

The relationship between Rey and Kylo has become a focal point for the series, so it’s only natural  that the final film in the saga would thoroughly explore it. Will Kylo Ren tempt Rey over to the Dark Side? Will she bring him into the Light? Will they get together? Let’s just hope they don’t turn out to be siblings, because we don’t need a Jaime-and-Cersei situation in space.

Speaking of Kylo Ren, director J.J. Abrams talked about the repaired mask Kylo destroyed in The Last Jedi, and how it represents his struggle with the Light and Dark sides of the Force.

"Having [Kylo Ren] be masked, but also fractured, is a very intentional thing. Like that classic Japanese process of taking ceramics and repairing them, and how the breaks in a way define the beauty of the piece as much as the original itself. As fractured as Ren is, the mask becomes a visual representation of that. There’s something about this that tells his history. His mask doesn’t ultimately hide him and his behavior is revealed."

I like the idea that Kylo, despite hiding behind a mask like his grandfather Darth Vader, cannot truly hide who he is. Get into it, Abrams.

Finally, during last week’s Triple Force Friday event, we learned some interesting info about what Rose Tico has been doing since The Last Jedi.

“Rose has risen through the ranks from lowly engineering support crew to military commander,” reads the placard. “She leads the Engineering Corps in making the necessary modifications to keep The Resistance’s gear operational, as well as countering new advancements in First Order technology.”

So Rose is now a military commander in the Resistance. That’s a huge step up from her workaday role in The Last Jedi. I can’t wait to see her barking orders at Finn when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
