The women of Marvel really want an all-female superhero movie

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made strides in recent years when it comes to representation, having released its first female-led film with Captain Marvel and its first movie with a black lead with Black Panther. And with new television series and films on the way in Phase 4, the franchise is also gearing up to include more major roles for LGBTQ+ characters, something fans have been asking for repeatedly.

But despite Captain Marvel’s entrance into the MCU — and that very intentional feminist moment near the end of Avengers: Endgame — women would still like to see themselves on the front lines of MCU projects more often. And that desire apparently extends to the actresses who appear in the movies.

According to Brie Larson, she and her female co-stars have been pushing Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to create an all-female superhero film for some time now. Think the Avengers movies, only with characters like Captain Marvel, Valkyrie, Shuri, Okoye, and the soon-to-be Mighty Thor teaming up to defeat villains side by side.

“I will say that a lot of the female cast members from Marvel walked up to Kevin and we were like, ‘We are in this together, we want to do this,’” Larson recalled during an interview with Variety. “What that means, I have no idea. You know, I’m not in charge of the future of Marvel, but it is something that we’re really passionate about and we love, and I feel like if enough people out in the world talk about how much they want it, maybe it’ll happen.”

And Feige has reportedly shown interest in an all-female film, even if such a project isn’t currently in the works. With all of the female-led movies coming out in the near future, though — including Black Widow, Thor: Love and Thunder and even a Captain Marvel sequel — it seems like something that could be on the horizon. After all, the excitement surrounding DC’s Batwoman and the Birds of Prey movie more than proves that superhero stories with more than one powerful woman at the helm are in demand. And why wouldn’t we want to see all of our favorite Marvel ladies in action together?

“I don’t know what kind of change that brings the MCU,” Larson said when asked about what it means that women are taking on more significant roles in the MCU. “I love Carol Danvers so much and I love playing her and I love the way that she interacts with people and the way that she’s grown into herself. So, I’m excited to see where that goes. But there’s so many other new characters that I love, as well, that I’m excited to see and it’s so hard to imagine now where we’re at with these stories. Them existing without any one of those characters. It’s hard to pull that apart.”

Hopefully, we will get to see those new characters embrace fresh and diverse paths in the MCU — and eventually run into one another in the process. With the Infinity Saga over and done with, the future of the franchise is full of possibility. And that includes the possibility of an all-female Avengers.
