Elizabeth Olsen: WandaVision will satisfy fans of the MCU and Marvel Comics
Scarlet Witch is arguably one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — she did almost overpower Thanos on her own during Avengers: Endgame, after all — and she’s one who, sadly, has yet to receive her own story in the MCU. But that will all change when WandaVision releases on Disney’s streaming new service, Disney+.
The upcoming series, which comes out in 2021, will be set in a bizarre, sitcom-esque world, with Wanda Maximoff and Vision at the center of the story. And while fans don’t have much to go on in terms of plot details, star Elizabeth Olsen has begun teasing the series, confirming that it’ll be a satisfying ride for both fans of the MCU films and readers of Marvel Comics.
During an interview with the BUILD Series, the actress said, “Especially with WandaVision, I’m just so excited for fans. Because if they know anything about the Scarlet Witch in the comics, I think this show will just get them so excited.”
According to Olsen, fans will get more insight into Wanda’s character, including why she’s called Scarlet Witch in the first place. Though comic fans already call her by this name, it hasn’t really been brought up in the MCU, with of the characters simply call her Wanda. (Peter Parker has, sadly, yet to ask for her “made-up name.”)
"This show will explore why she’s known as Scarlet Witch and how she is Scarlet Witch, as opposed to Wanda. We’ve always referred to her as Wanda in our films."
In the comics, Scarlet Witch is the daughter of the mutant Magneto. Because Fox owned the movie rights to the X-Men characters, that couldn’t happen in the MCU. (Although, now that Disney owns Fox, who knows if that might change?) Her powers are complicated; essentially, she can “warp reality,” causing unlikely events to happen. In the House of M storyline, she even changes the whole universe. But these aspects, like her name, have been largely unexplored on the big screen; mostly she just shoots red light from her hands.

With WandaVision, it sounds like we’ll really get to know Wanda outside of her role on the Avengers team — and given the push for more significant roles for women in the MCU, that sounds like a promising storyline for the franchise to pursue. And given that Wanda and Vision have mostly remained on the sidelines of the past few films, it’ll be interesting to see them take center stage.
