The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones inspired plenty of discussion, but perhaps nothing inspired more passionate debate than an errant cup of coffee left on the table in “The Last of the Starks,” during the post-battle feast at Winterfell. As Daenerys, Jon and the rest of the survivors celebrated their victory, there the coffee cup sat on a table in front of Daenerys Targaryen, Mother of Dragons and Sipper of Lattes.
Naturally, some (including Sophie Turner) wanted to blame Emilia Clarke for the mishap, but the truth is much more sinister. Clarke told all while appearing on The Jimmy Kimmel Show:
And the culprit was…Conleth Hill, aka the spymaster Varys, who appears to have betrayed Dany much earlier than we thought! Said Clarke:
"We had like a party before the Emmys recently, and Conleth Hill, who plays Varys, who’s sitting next to me in that scene, he pulls me aside and he’s like, ‘Emilia, I’ve got to tell you something. I’ve got to tell you something, love. The coffee cup was mine!’"
Hill apologized to Clarke…sort of. “He’s like, ‘I think so, I’m sorry, darling, I didn’t want to say anything because it seemed the heat was very much on you.’” Ouch. If you can’t trust your spymaster who can you trust?
HBO digitally deleted the coffee cup from subsequent airings of the episode, but no one is likely to forget it. Or that water bottle. Beverages everywhere in Westeros.
It’s not all doom and betrayal for the Mother of Dragons, however. Speaking to E! News, Clarke reflected on all those parents who decided to name their children Daenerys or Khaleesi…before they saw her burn down King’s Landing in season 8. “y the time someone’s called their child Khaleesi or Daenerys, they’re like four when season eight happened and so they no longer become the character but rather the child that they are,” she said, “so that’s good. They create their own identity.” We certainly hope so.
