2. Total Rickall – Season 2, Episode 4

The last two entries on this list highlight Roiland and Harmon at their most creative. This is the creative duo at their most cartoonish and whimsical. A brain parasite has found its way to Earth and has infected the Smith household and is conjuring up new family members. The character list is long and hilarious, featuring Abradolph Lincler, Reverse Girraffe, Hamurai, Photography Raptor, Mr. Poopy Butthole and Pencilvester.

Except…one of them is apparently real. And the ramifications of that turn a fun episode dark SUPER QUICKLY, ending with both emotional and physical trauma that spans the series. Oooh weee!

1. The Ricklantis Mixup – Season 3, Episode 7

This is the best episode of Rick and Morty to date. The episode tricks you up front into thinking we’re getting a one-off adventure of the dynamic duo going to Atlantis. Instead we’re treated to a bleak character study of the lives of those poor Ricks and Mortys who are trapped in the Citadel after the main story Rick destroyed the Council of Ricks in the premiere.

This episode features a Stand By Me-style subplot of following around a group of Rickless Morty’s on their graduation day before they’re assigned to new Ricks, a disgruntled factory worker Rick who kills his boss and hijacks the factory’s secret cookie ingredient when he’s passed over for a job, and a presidential election where a bunch of Ricks are suddenly trailing one very charismatic and friendly Morty.

That Morty is eventually elected president after a failed assassination attempt, and it is revealed that he is in fact Evil Morty, who we have met in previous episodes. Evil Morty is a genius and has spent most of his time in the show in hiding or killing various Ricks and kidnapping Mortys.

OH, and there’s a Joe Walsh song!

“The Ricklantis Mixup” is a brilliant episode that sets up a big bad villain that will assuredly be a factor in upcoming seasons, as well as showing the inter-dimensional ramifications of these capers around the multiverse. These are real Ricks and real Mortys that are left to suffer.

What episodes do you think I missed? Obviously I love the inter-dimensional cable episodes and Morty’s Mindblowers, but I just felt they didn’t belong on a top 10 list. Let us know in the comments what we missed and what you’re hoping to see in season 4 of Rick and Morty, which debuts at 10:30 p.m. EST on Sunday, November 10 on Adult Swim.
