In October, George R.R. Martin visited Chicago, where he gave a couple interviews, received an award, and generally visited around his old stomping grounds. One of the Q&A sessions was with Chicago author Eve Ewing, who asked Martin a few questions written by fans.

One of those fans was A Song of Ice and Fire luminary BryndenBFish, who asked whether Martin would have sided with Aerys or Robert during Robert’s Rebellion. In true GRRM fashion, he didn’t offer a simple answer. In fact, his answer is basically a mini-treatise on the unsatisfactory nature of simple answers. It’s kind of great.

So Martin would have supported Robert and the rebels, but has little interest in justifying his choice. “I don’t like to provide easy answers. I like to make the reader wrestle with the question and think about it. Because some of these questions never are easy when we encounter them in real life.” He also provides lots of historical reference points, from the Vietnam War to the Magna Carta. Other factors include the personal way the conflict kicked off.

Basically, Martin provides some food for thought. Which side of the conflict would you have been on? Any Targaryen loyalists out there?
