The Mandalorian cast and crew on what comes after that premiere-ending twist
Disney+ has finally landed, and connection problems notwithstanding, the streaming service is already a smashing success, thanks in no small part to the first-ever live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian.
From the mind of Iron Man director Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian follows Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal in the titular role as a lone bounty bounty hunter plying his trade in the Outer Rim. The first episode, “Chapter 1,” ended with a quite a surprise. Speaking at the show’s Hollywood premiere, Favreau said we can expect more where that came from. “Part of what is fun about doing eight episodes is that each one could have a surprise and twist.”
What exactly was that twist? Beware SPOILERS from here on out.
At the end of “Chapter 1,” our hero finds the mark he was hired to bring back, dead or alive: a 50-year-old infant, a member of the same species as Yoda. According to Carl Weathers, who plays the bounty hunter guild master Greef Carga, there’s a lot of mystery surrounding the little fella.
"You have to see the shows to figure out who this baby Yoda really is, and what he is all about, or even if he is really a baby Yoda. He has his own name, and he is very interesting and very knowledgeable and very cute. I never use that word, but he is a cute little guy."
Whatever happens with Baby Yoda, which is what we’re calling him until he gets an official name, The Mandalorian is clearly off to a strong start. If that continues, Disney CEO Alan Horn hasn’t ruled out the possibility of making it into a feature film. “The Mandalorian is already proving to be a big thing, so if that series proves to be so compelling that we reverse engineer it into a theatrical release, a two-hour film or whatever, O.K.,” he told Variety.
Horn didn’t specify if this means they would recut the show so it would work as a feature or if they’d make something entirely new. It’s all theoretical at this point anyway, but it makes sense. Disney is bringing its big screen properties to TV, not just with Star Wars but also with a bunch of upcoming series starring Marvel heroes. Why shouldn’t the reverse happen as well?
