Doctor Who star thinks Jodie Whittaker will “bloom” in season 2
By Ariba Bhuvad
When one first becomes the Doctor on Doctor Who, things are new. There’s a period of transition as the actor, crew, and audience adjust to this new, crazy world. That goes double for the latest season of the show, which saw Jodie Whittaker step into the role of the Doctor and Chris Chibnall into the role of showrunner.
Season 11 got some mixed reactions from fans, but however you felt about, former Doctor Who star Arthur Darvill (who played Rory on the show from 2010-2012, when Matt Smith was the Doctor) thinks things are just getting started. “The second series is the one where they have fun,” he told What’s on TV. Jodie Whittaker, incidentally, is filming her second series as we speak. Brace for fun?

“I think Jodie is amazing,” Darvill said. “I’m really looking forward to what they do next year. I always think the second series of anyone in that role is the one where they bloom. You’ve had the year of ‘Will they like it? won’t they like it?’ and then the second year is great. We saw that with David [Tennant], Matt [Smith] and Peter [Capaldi], the second series is the one where they have fun.”
Oh man, Tennant’s second season was amazing. Who remembers “The Impossible Planet” or “The Girl in the Fireplace”?!
Darvill is very enthusiastic about Whittaker being the first female Doctor. He worked with her on Broadchurch, so he knows her talent extremely well. “She’s totally committed in everything she does and has this glint in her eye, this cheeky streak and I think she brings so much to the role.”
Whittaker is quite the chipper, cheeky individual, isn’t she? I remember when they first announced she would be the next Doctor, I was ecstatic. She brings such a unique and vibrant presence to a character who has gone through so many different versions. It was past time for a woman take the mantle.

But I’m afraid we still have a bit of a wait ahead of us until Whittaker’s second Doctor Who season returns in 2020. Still, we’ll be watching this space.
