Matt Reeves reveals first look at Robert Pattinson as The Batman
Citizens of Gotham can now sleep easier, as director Matt Reeves has revealed the first look of Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader as he’ll appear in The Batman. Production on the film kicked off a couple of weeks ago in London, and will reportedly focus on Bruce Wayne being a detective vigilante, as opposed to Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight, who was more of a brutal bruiser.
Let’s take a look at that suit, shall we?
Well, it’s very dark, but what I can see, I like. Pattinson definitely has the jawline to pull off Batman. I’m also getting some Christian Bale-from-The Dark Knight vibes from the suit itself, what with the armored plating look and all.
As The A.V. Club has pointed out, bat-fans round the internet have done their thing and started to wonder if the bat symbol on the costume’s chest piece is actually made out of the gun that was used to kill Bruce Wayne’s parents, as it was in Kevin Smith’s Detective Comics #1000. The evidence:
That would certainly be a dark direction to go. We dig it.
Reeves has lined up quite the ensemble cast for The Batman, including Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Paul Dano as the Riddler, and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman. Kravitz recently spoke to Variety about her role. Was she nervous taking on this iconic part?
"Definitely, I was excited when I got the role, and usually when you get a job the people who are excited about it are you, your parents, your agent, your friends and that’s kind of it. But when the press release came, I got more text messages and calls than I’ve gotten on my birthday, on my wedding day. All of a sudden, the reality began to sink in about what this means not only to me, but to everybody else culturally — and the fans of this universe are so dedicated and opinionated."
Kravitz has never worked with Pattinson before, they’re getting into a good groove on this set. “I had to camera test with him and now we’ve been training together and rehearsing together and he’s just a delightful person and such a wonderful, thoughtful actor,” she said. “I think he’s perfect for the role and it’s going to be such an adventure. I’m excited to have him as my partner in crime and to be there to support each other, because it’s intense. It’s going to be a long shoot and there’s a lot of pressure, and I know he has my back and I have his.”
I wonder if Reeves has a screen test of Zoe Kravitz in her Catwoman suit video loaded up and ready to tweet. That would be very cool.
The Batman hits theaters on June 25, 2021.
