John Boyega pushes back against Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker criticism
It’s no secret that, when the conclusion to the Skywalker Saga hit theaters back in December, it became one of the most divisive Star Wars installments to date. The Rise of Skywalker may have tied up all the storylines from the first three film trilogies, but many fans took issue with how it chose to do so. And when Star Wars fans have a problem, you can count on hearing about it for some time after the film debuts. After all, many fans are still complaining about 2017’s The Last Jedi, so it’s not at all surprising that the same is true of The Rise of Skywalker.
When one fan went as far as to call the movie “embarrassing” on Twitter, star John Boyega (Finn) pushed back. Boyega acknowledged that there might have been some disappointing aspects of the film, but still defended it as still a worthwhile endeavor, adding that most fans have gotten over the movie’s flaws already.
“Embarrassing?” Boyega wrote. “LOL you wish. Very fulfilling, some disappointments but yet not that big of a deal. Everyone has moved on.”
It’s hard to disagree with Boyega on this one. While there are always some components of a film that could be improved upon, calling The Rise of Skywalker an embarrassment is taking things a little far, especially given the movie’s box-office success.
Of course, Boyega has never been shy about giving his opinions on the franchise, and doesn’t hesitate to admit when he doesn’t particularly care for a storyline. In fact, he even recently mocked the Reylo romance that took center stage in The Rise of Skywalker — a romance many fans were actually rooting for — and said he was “a little iffy” on The Last Jedi. And he made no bones about not liking one of his cornier lines from The Last Jedi:
And Boyega has endured his fair share of heat from fans for expressing his opinions. He even made a music video about it!
So does this mean he doesn’t care about the attacks or that he cares a lot? It’s an unanswerable question.
Anyway, when it come to Star Wars, the only definite is that every movie won’t please every fan. But to suggest any of these films are total failures definitely seems like an extreme.
