This week, the first part of Doctor Who audio Robophobia – a sequel to The Robots of Death – is available to download right now from Big Finish for free!

Big Finish’s run of free audio downloads – or “lockdownloads”, as they’ve called them – comes to an end this week. Over the past few months, we’ve had a huge number of stories from a wide variety of ranges available to download, including Doctor WhoBlake’s 7, and most recently The Diary of River Song.

This week’s free download is the first part of the Seventh Doctor story, Robophobia by Nicholas Briggs. Essentially a sequel to the popular Tom Baker story The Robots of DeathRobophobia sees the Doctor meeting the Voc Robots once again.

"Nothing has ever been officially confirmed, but there is a rumour that on a Sandminer bound for Kaldor City, the robots somehow turned homicidal and nearly wiped out the entire crew. Can that really be true? The robot transport ship Lorelei has a cargo of over a hundred fifty-seven thousand robots on board, all deactivated. So even if there were any truth in the rumour of that massacre, there’d still be no danger. Surely, there wouldn’t…But then, the Doctor witnesses a murder."

Robophobia introduced Liv Chenka, a character who would not only become the Doctor’s companion, but would eventually get her own spin-off series.

More from Winter is Coming

Liv Chenka

It’s easy to see why Robophobia has been selected as this week’s free download. Not only is it a great story in its own right, but it also introduces Liv Chenka.

Played by Nicola Walker, Liv has grown to become quite an important character over the past decade. While in Robophobia, she was essentially introduced as a guest character, she would eventually return in 2014 to become a companion to the Eighth Doctor in Dark Eyes 2. In fact, she most recently appeared in this month’s Eighth Doctor box set Stranded 1.

There is another reason why Robophobia has likely been chosen as the free download this week. Next month sees the release of the second volume of audio spin-off series The Robots. Along with starring Nicola Walker as Liv and Claire Rushbrook as her sister Tula, the series focuses on their homeworld of Kaldor, during a particularly major time in its history. Volume two will see David Collings and Pamela Salem reprising their roles as Poul and Toos from The Robots of Death, which is definitely exciting.
