The Walking Dead showrunner teases season 10 finale, air date reveal

It feels like we’ve been waiting for years to watch the season 10 finale of The Walking Dead, which was originally due to release on April 14 but was pushed back to “later this year” thanks to TV sets everywhere being shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic. During this wait, we’ve had many of the cast and crew come tease what’s to come in the finale. Let’s just say that some big things have been promised, including “a full-on Game of Thrones super war battle,” according to Norman Reedus (Daryl).

The latest to offer up some details is showrunner Angela Kang, who appeared on AMC’s Friday Night in With the Morgans, co-hosted by Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan). Rather than immediately hyping up the huge battle between the Whisperers and our survivors, she teased more of the other storylines going on, like Ezekiel, Eugene, Yumiko and their new companion Princess traveling to meet Stephanie, a member of the Commonwealth, an entirely new community.

“Obviously, we’ve got this new power group of four with Princess and Ezekiel and Eugene and Yumiko who are off on the road,” Kang said. “We’re going to see some interesting turns in that.”

It’s worth keeping a close eye on this storyline because if it’s anything like it is in Robert Kirkman’s comics, it could lead to the biggest change in the story since our survivors first reached Alexandria.

Next up, Kang gives us a heads up on Beta, who is now the man leading the charge against our survivors after Alpha was killed by Negan. “Now that Alpha’s gone and Beta is having to step up into that leadership role with his kind of half Alpha/Beta face, we’re going to see our people take their stand against Beta and the Whisperers,” Kang said. Of course, our survivors have no choice but to make a stand after Beta and his huge horde of Whisperers/walkers charged into battle in the cliffhanger of the penultimate episode.

“There’s some pretty cool things going on with Negan,” she added. Let’s be real here, when is there not cool things going on with Negan?

Kang also teased a bunch of other interesting plot points, including stuff with Carol, Gabriel, Daryl, and the return of Maggie:

“We’ve got Carol kind of in her quest for redemption. We’ve got some awesome stuff with Father Gabriel. We know that we’re waiting for the return of Maggie. Daryl has got some awesome business going on. It’s the whole cast. Everybody’s great.”

The last time we saw Maggie (Lauren Cohen) was in “What Comes After” in season 9, which was Andrew Lincoln’s (Rick) final episode in the show. The teaser gives us no clues as to why she has returned, but the show previously covered up her disappearance by explaining that she had left to travel with Georgie to help out other communities.

I’m finding it difficult to work out how they’re going to cram all of this story into one episode. At least they’ve had enough time to iron things out.

We still don’t know exactly when the season 10 finale, “A Certain Doom,” will air, but Kang says the date will be revealed on July 24 during The Walking Dead virtual panel an Comic-Con@Home. At long last, we’re inching towards closure.
