In The Walking Dead: World Beyond, out group of teen heroes must contend with both the living and the dead. Ends up man is still the real monster. Who knew?
Right after The Walking Dead airs its much-awaited season 10 finale later this year, fans will have an all-new spinoff to watch: The Walking Dead: World Beyond. It might not necessarily be what we asked for, but its promise to tackle the franchise from a new angle is definitely something refreshing.
World Beyond follows a group of teenagers who find themselves outside the protection of their community and in out in the “world beyond” on a quest, surrounded by walkers — although the dead are called “empties” in this show! Here’s the official synopsis:
"The Walking Dead: World Beyond expands the universe of The Walking Dead, delving into a new mythology and story that follows the first generation raised in a surviving civilization of the post-apocalyptic world. Two sisters along with two friends leave a place of safety and comfort to brave dangers, known and unknown, living and undead on an important quest. Pursued by those who wish to protect them and those who wish to harm them, a tale of growing up and transformation unfurls across dangerous terrain, challenging everything they know about the world, themselves and each other. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. But all of them will find the truths they seek."
Check out the brand new teaser trailer:
This new show is a two-season limited series co-created by Walking Dead uber-boss Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman and showrunner Matt Negrete. It stars Aliyah Royale (Iris), Alexa Mansour (Hope), Nicolas Cantu (Elton), Hal Cumpston (Silas), and Julia Ormond (Elizabeth).
The tone of this show seems very different from the brutal, unforgiving The Walking Dead. Could AMC be trying to attract more of a young adult audience? The latest teaser trailer, subtitled Generations, allows us a glimpse at the potential threats beyond the walkers. Of course, with this being within the Walking Dead universe, humanity often proves a bigger problem than the zombies. The clip shows our group contending with both the living and the dead:
During the World Beyond Comic-Con@Home panel a few weeks back, Scott Gimple teased that the show will build on the mysteries that the other shows have alluded to. The most exciting of these has to be the Civil Republic of the Midwest (CRM), the mysterious community that airlifted away Rick in season 9.
“We found out a great deal about them,” Gimple explained. “They are a very mysterious force, and the community they keep secure are incredibly secretive. Regardless, we go into that community a little bit… We don’t get a deep look at it, but we get some pretty tantalizing tips to it.”
"We see [Julia Ormond’s] Elizabeth, we see other people. Yeah, they’re a constant presence in this story and it explains a lot towards what we’ve seen in other shows and it invites new questions."
Both The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead have connections to the CRM, so World Beyond could bring everything together. On top of that, we also have the upcoming trilogy of movies following Rick Grimes, which will likely explore this mysterious community even more.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond kicks off on October 4 on AMC, right after the season 10 finale of The Walking Dead. And then, a week later, we’ll get the season 6 premiere of Fear The Walking Dead. The dead are back.
