7. Episode 107, “The Wedding”: Jamie and Claire awkwardly consummate their marriage

I gave this moment a shoutout in my list about Sam Heughan’s best Outlande moments, and I felt it necessary to repeat it here. This moment is incredibly awkward, but also adorable, at least according to me. For Claire, having sex was not a new thing, but for Jamie, it was his first time. He was so hesitant, reluctant, and scared, and through the whole ordeal, he was trying to be gentle and careful.

Heughan’s performance as the shy, awkward virgin paralleled with Balfe’s portrayal of an experienced woman turned out to be a very beautiful moment for both characters. While in the moment we might have felt embarrassed for the couple, when all was said and done I think we all had a smile on our faces because it was the beginning of their love story.

From this moment on, Claire and Jamie truly became one, and for that alone, it’s one of the best moments for both of them, and it wouldn’t have landed as perfectly as it did had Balfe and Heughan not sold every inch of it.
