How the filming break made Stranger Things season 4 “better than ever”
By Ariba Bhuvad
COVID-19 delayed TV and movie production around the world, but it also gave writers more time to perfect their scripts, which is good in the long run.
The fourth season of Stranger Things started filming a long while ago, before the coronavirus shut down sets around the world. It even managed to put out a teaser before everyone took a break.
The Stranger Things team is now back on set. Unfortunately, the production halt means we won’t get season 4 as soon as we were hoping, but speaking to Collider, producer Shawn Levy sees an up-side, saying that the quality of the scripts is “better than ever.” That makes sense considering the extra time showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer had to write them. They had time not only to perfect their initial drafts, but also to go back and rewrite things once they were all done!
“I’ll just say the pandemic definitely massively delayed shooting and therefore the launch of our current Season 4, date still TBD,” Levy said. “But it impacted very positively by allowing the Duffer brothers, for the first time ever, to write the entire season before we shoot it and to have time to rewrite in a way that they rarely had before so the quality of these screenplays are exceptional, maybe better than ever.”
As for when season 4 will actually premiere, as Levy says, it’s unclear. I’d guess we’re looking at sometime next year, either late spring/early summer (if they’re ambitious) or the usual Halloween slot that both seasons 1 and 2 premiered in. I vote for Halloween — I know it’s a longer wait, but it just makes more sense for a show this steeped in horror. Plus, according to Joe Keery (Steve), season 4 is going to be a lot scarier than seasons past!
Despite the longer-than-expected hiatus between seasons, I think we can all take a collective sigh of relief that when Stranger Things does return for its fourth season, it’s going to be…wait for it…
