Jim Gaffigan joins the cast of Stargirl as Thunderbolt

Stargirl just added comedian Jim Gaffigan to the cast, as the electrifying and well-intentioned Thunderbolt, basically a genie who’s lamp is a pen.

The excellent first season of the DC superhero show Stargirl presented us with the mystery of the pink pen. There was something peculiar about this pen; it would giggle from time to time, suggesting that someone or something lived within it.

Well, it looks like we’ll finally learn what the heck this pink pen actually is in season 2. According to Entertainment Weekly, comedian Jim Gaffigan has been cast in the role of Thunderbolt, or rather, his voice for the CGI character.

In the Stargirl comics, Thunderbolt has been trapped in there for 10 years when he gets let out; he was first introduced in 1940, so he has a long publication history. His character is described as a “magical, electrical, fun-loving, wish-granting pink imp from the mysterious land of Bahdnesia.”

It gets weirder. “The wishes he grants often cause more trouble than the wish-asker would ever expect,” reads the official character description. “But despite his somewhat constant supernatural disasters, the Thunderbolt’s heart is always in the right place, even if it is wounded by the friends he has lost throughout his long existence.”

Basically, the pink pen is to Thunderbolt as the lamp is to Aladdin’s Genie. And apparently Thunderbolt is just as funny, silly, and eager to help others, sometimes to his own detriment.

During the course of season 1, we saw Courtney/Stargirl (Brec Bassinger) take the pink pen from the Justice Society of America’s headquarters. Pat (Luke Wilson) wasn’t pleased with this, and told her that whatever is hidden within this pen is not to be unleashed.

Clearly, his warning doesn’t work, since Gaffigan is officially part of the cast. I mean, Gaffigan is a pretty affable comedian, and the pen giggles like a cute little kid — how harmful could it be?

Stargirl will return in 2021 on The CW.
