Even people who didn’t love the last couple of seasons of Game of Thrones loved the music by Ramin Djawadi. And he’s boarding the prequel.
House of the Dragon, the first of several reported Game of Thrones prequel series in the works at HBO, has been staffing up lately, and not just in front of the camera: in addition to big-name actors like Matt Smith joining the cast, the show has also been hiring concept artists, costume designers and other pros.
And now, it looks like an old favorite will be returning, as noticed by Los Siete Reinos. According to his CV (accessed on the website for his agency, GSA Music), Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi will be part of House of the Dragon.
This is fantastic news. The music of Game of Thrones was as important to the show as any of the plot twists or dragons or performances, and Djawadi wrote excellent music. I’m sure everyone has their favorite song, but for me, nothing will top “Light of the Seven,” the piece he wrote for when Cersei blows up the Sept of Baelor in “The Winds of Winter”:
Specifically, Djawadi’s CV just says he’s working on the “pilot” for House of the Dragon, which is interesting because the show was ordered straight to series and won’t have a pilot in the traditional sense. Maybe he’s only working on the first episode, maybe he’s working on the first episode and they’ll decide whether he stays on after that, or maybe it’s something else; for now, it’s enough to know he’s involved.
It’s the right move. Even if Djawadi doesn’t become the permanent composer for House of the Dragon, it’s appropriate to provide a link back to the original series. And I wouldn’t mind him becoming the permanent composer, either, because his sense of musical grandeur is a good fit for the story, which sees members of the Targaryen family fighting each other for the Iron Throne, often on dragonback. It’s full of huge, sweeping tragedy and big emotions, which Djawadi excels at.
