Tom Holland: Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield NOT in Spider-Man 3

facebooktwitterreddit

Alright, seriously, what gives? We’ve been hearing so many things about the upcoming third Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland, including that it would feature the return of former Spider-Men Andrew Garfield and possibly Tobey Maguire. And that’s on top of Jamie Foxx returning as Electro and Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus, which come from very reliable sources.

But now, Holland is out here doing his utmost to throw cold water on these ideas. Esquire asked him point blank about Maguire and Garfield, and this is what our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man had to say:

"No, no, they will not be appearing in this film. Unless they have hidden the most massive piece of information from me, which I think is too big of a secret for them to keep from me. But as of yet, no. It’ll be a continuation of the Spider-Man movies that we’ve been making."

As frustrating as this back and forth uncertainty may be, I’m not letting it get me down just yet.

Is Tom Holland telling the truth or is just Marvel misdirection?

First off, Tom Holland is infamous for giving away spoilers, and it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibilities for Marvel to keep this from him for as long as they’re able.

It sounds silly, but the guy filmed Ironman’s funeral scene in Avengers: Endgame without actually knowing what the scene was about. Given his track record, it would make perfect sense for him to be in the dark about this. Secondly, even if he does know, I highly doubt Marvel is about to let Tom Holland go around blurting such a monumental secret to the press.

Personally, I think he just doesn’t know. Holland himself has admitted that Marvel goes above and beyond to confuse and misdirect him with the script so as to make sure he only knows what he needs to. So don’t give up hope just yet, Spider-fans, there’s still a huge possibility that the rumors are true.

Also, we can’t overlook the fact that Holland just gave an interview where he called Spider-Man 3the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made“. If it’s just going to be continuing the story we already know, why would it be deemed such an ambitious venture…unless there was something more?

Call it denial, but after the latest episode of WandaVision, I think Marvel is serious about heading into the multiverse. If Evan Peters can “return” as Pietro Maximoff, then Maguire and Garfield can reprise their roles…right?
