Imagine logging into HBO Max to watch the new Tom and Jerry movie, only to find that Zack Snyder’s Justice League pops up in its place. That’s what happened to several users on Monday.

Per Deadline, HBO Max released a statement acknowledging the “error,” but the streamer was mum on details as to how the mistake occurred.

The idea that one movie could be replaced with another — one that hasn’t even been released yet — without someone noticing beforehand and putting a stop to it is incredibly suspect, and it had fans wondering what really happened.

Was the Zack Snyder’s Justice League leak an accident, or intentional?

As soon as the error was discovered and corrected, social media was awash with conspiracy theories that suggested Warner Bros. executives leaked the movie on purpose, in part because the studio was about to release a Ray Fisher/Cyborg character teaser the next day.

Fisher made waves last year when he accused Joss Whedon — who took over directing duties from Zack Snyder partway through filming — of inappropriate behavior. When Snyder returned for the Snyder Cut, Fisher stood in solidarity with him and praised the director, just as the director and the cast supported Fisher. So the idea would be that someone leaked the movie as a move against him.

Other theories were less inflammatory. Many people saw it as an attempt to promote the movie ahead of the press review embargo.

Or it was just a technical glitch.

With the movie’s release just over a week away, the hype is at a fever pitch and fans are eager to see Snyder’s vision of Justice League get its day in the spotlight. Let’s hope HBO Max is up for the demand, though, because the last thing Warner Bros. needs is for the platform to crash with so many fans trying to see the movie they’ve been waiting for.
