Netflix’s adaptation of Shadow and Bone arrives in just over a month, and the streamer is doing everything it can to hype up its newest fantasy series, releasing posters, images and a trailer. Now, the official Shadow and Bone Twitter account has shared a glimpse of a training session between main character Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) and her mentor Baghra (Zoë Wanamaker).

Fans of Leigh Bardugo’s book series know that Baghra is a no-nonsense kind of teacher, and it looks like the show is staying true to that. Poor Alina is going to put up with a lot from her mentor when it comes to honing her powers, but the clip shows their sessions paying off, with Alina finally summoning light.

That’s no small task for the Sun Summoner, who, despite her name, has never truly utilized her Grisha powers at the start of the series. With no idea how to call upon it, it’s nice to see her beginning to master her talent.

Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows covers get makeovers

This clip isn’t the only bit of Shadow and Bone news coming out this week. We also got a new cover for the original novel, featuring Alina wielding an impressive amount of power. Six of Crows is also getting a makeover with a new cover featuring Kaz, Inej and Jesper.

All of the promotion surrounding Shadow and Bone is giving fans more reason to get excited for this adaptation — and luckily, we won’t have long to wait before we get to see the series play out on the small screen. Shadow and Bone arrives on Netflix on April 23.
