12 movies that could spin off from Zack Snyder’s Justice League
The other week, Zack Snyder’s Justice League — a re-up of the 2017 movie that preserves Zack Snyder’s original directorial vision — debuted on HBO Max, and it’s a hit. With all the positive publicity, it’s hard to imagine that Snyder won’t be allowed to return to the DC Extended Universe and make the sequels to Justice League he originally envisioned, continuing the universe he established with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Justice League was supposed to have multiple sequels and several spin-offs that would spark the DCEU into a vibrant cinematic universe, but plans fell apart when the 2017 theatrical version of Justice League underperformed. Snyder’s movies provided the setup for many existing DC franchises like Wonder Woman and Aquaman, along with upcoming projects like The Flash and Ava DuVernay’s The New Gods. The New Gods revolves around Darkseid’s team of warriors, the Female Furies, who are led by Granny Goodness, one of Darkseid’s trusted generals who appeared briefly in the Snyder Cut.
Fans have been hoping for a sequel to Man of Steel ever since the movie’s debut in 2013, and after seeing Ben Affleck and Jared Leto together at the end of the Snyder Cut there are calls for Affleck to return for another Batman movie.
The four-hour Snyder Cut sets up several possible spin-offs in addition to the ones that were already announced. Let’s take a look at some of the ones we’d like to see the most.
The Bat Family
At this point in the Batman timeline, the Bat family should be complete. Joker killed Jason Todd, which means that Dick Grayson is already Nightwing, Tim Drake could already be the new Robin and Jason Todd could be back from the dead as Red Hood. Batgirl would also be in the picture, and they could introduce Lucius Fox’s son Luke as well. Aside from referencing the dead Robin in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Batman’s conversation with the Joker at the end of the Snyder Cut, there is no mention of a Bat Family, but that’s not to say they’re not out there. Seeing them in action with Affleck’s Batman would be a great way to launch their stories.
Green Lantern Corps
Zack Snyder’s Justice League features a brief look at two members of the Green Lantern Corps: Yalan Gur, who is seen in the great battle, and Kilowog, whose dead body is seen in Cyborg’s vision. Snyder tried to find a way for Ryan Reynolds to be in the film as Hal Jordan, and he also wanted John Stewart in there as well. The Green Lanterns Corps has a rich history and a standalone movie could explore their story and across the galaxy.
Death in the Family and rise of Red Hood
Joker taunts Batman about sending a boy to “do a man’s job” at the end of the Snyder Cut, and Robin’s death is something that weighs heavily on Batman. The comic book arc Death In the Family (1988) spanned four issues and featured the tragic and horrific death of Jason Todd at the hands of the Joker. Todd is subsequently resurrected in the Lazarus Pits and becomes the anti-hero Red Hood. Giving Jared Leto the ability to show his range in a pivotal moment in Batman’s career would be something to behold.
Meet the Amazons
The Amazons of Themyscira were introduced in 2017’s Wonder Woman, but they’ve also made an impression with appearances in Wonder Woman 1984 and in the Snyder Cut. Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright need to have a story of their own, set far enough in the past so that Wright’s Antiope can feature prominently along with Hippolyta. In fact, tell the story of the great battle against Darkseid from the Amazons’ perspective. Please and thank you.
Martian Manhunter
The Martian Manhunter, also known as J’onn J’onzz, makes his debut in the Snyder Cut, but it just so happens that he appeared in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman and we didn’t even know it. General Calvin Swanwick has been providing Lois Lane with inside information about the government and the military for a while now. It’s unclear whether Swanwick is a real person being impersonated by the Martian Manhunter, or if he’s an alias the alien uses to infiltrate the government from the inside. Either way, tell his story.
Cyborg and Flash team up
The Snyder Cut offers a glimpse at the budding bromance between Cyborg and Flash, and that needs to continue. Give them a story that’s not rooted in the Flashpoint canon so that they can keep building their friendship and save the world.
Aquaman and Wonder Woman team up
Arthur told Diana that there was bad blood between the Atlanteans and the Amazons, but neither one of them really grew up in those traditions, and found that they have more in common than not. Unlike the rest of the Justice League, Aquaman and Wonder Woman have pasts that stem from mythology, and seeing them come face to face with their pasts while fighting together could be intriguing.
Batman and Wonder Woman team up
There is no shortage of chemistry between Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince, but instead of pairing them romantically, give them a mission that will allow them to work together. Make it interesting, possibly set on another planet, so that Batman is entirely out of his element.
Batman vs Deathstroke
Joe Manganiello appeared briefly at the end of the theatrical cut of Justice League aboard Lex Luthor’s superyacht, and he had a slightly larger role in the Snyder Cut. Batman and Deathstroke have a complicated history that depends heavily upon which comic book canon you read. There have been points where they’ve worked together, albeit begrudgingly, and watching them cooperate is as fun as watching them fight. Give these two a big mystery, a race against time and a huge fight sequence. See what happens.
Man of Steel 2
Now that J.J. Abrams is putting together a new Superman movie with Ta-Nehisi Coates penning the script, let’s explore the multiverse with lots of Men of Steel, and some Women of Steel, too. Why not have Kal-El and Kara Zor-El meet their counterparts from other versions of Earth?
Cyborg standalone
Between Bitcoin and cyberterrorism, there are plenty of stories that Cyborg can sink his teeth into. We’ve seen his tragic origin in the Snyder Cut, now let’s see Cyborg on his own as he learns what he can do and carve a niche for himself in the superhero world.
Legion of Doom
Lex Luthor escaped custody and ended up on a yacht. Though his comments about forming a league of their own didn’t make it to the Snyder Cut, the Legion of Doom is a real thing in the DC Comics canon. Membership is a revolving door thanks to the organization being made up of a group of villains all watching out for their own interests. But imagine how fun it would be to pull villains from across the DC Universe and put them in one place with a massive plot to take over the world…and show it all from their perspective!
