We’re coming up on a year since Lovecraft Country debuted on HBO back in August 2020, and fans of the series developed by Misha Green are still patiently waiting on any news regarding a second season. The show is based on the 2016 book of the same name by Matt Ruff, though the adaptation steered far enough away from its source material that more story could be told.

The first season was met with favorable reviews and scored nominations at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and BAFTA Awards. Viewers fell in love with Jurnee Smollett as Letitia Lewis and Jonathan Majors as Atticus Freeman–though we didn’t always agree with his character. Other familiar faces in Lovecraft Country include Courtney B. Vance, Michael K. Williams, and Jamie Chung, among others.

There has been some hopeful buzz about a potential Lovecraft Country season 2, but an official renewal announcement has yet to be made. Here’s what we know about the show’s future.

Will there be a season 2 of Lovecraft Country?

Though Lovecraft Country season 2 has not been confirmed just yet, we have reason to believe it’s already in the early stages of development. As we previously reported, HBO chief content chief Casey Bloys provided an update on the next season in February of this year, telling Deadline:

"[Showrunner Misha Green] is working with a small team of writers and they’re coming up with a take. She had a book to go on in the first season, she and the writers wanted to go off and take some time to go out and figure out without a book with these characters, what’s the journey we want to go on. We all want to be sure she’s got a story to tell. That’s where she is right now, working on those ideas. I’m very hopeful, as is [Misha], so we’re giving them the time to work."

Prior to this tease from Bloys, showrunner Misha Green also expressed interest in keeping the show going. Following the debut season’s finale, she shared what she was hoping for with a second season, saying to Deadline:

"Nothing is official yet, but I envision a second season that carries on the spirit of Matt Ruff’s novel by continuing to reclaim the genre storytelling space that people of color have typically been left out of."

So as of the time of this article, Lovecraft Country season 2 isn’t official just yet, but probably will be soon.

When is Lovecraft Country season 2 filming?

We don’t have any concrete information as to when the second season will begin filming, but based on Bloys’ quote above, it might not be long until production starts. If Green has already been working on figuring out the story for the next installment with a group of writers, we’d hope they’d be ready to start back up sometime this year.

The first season was filmed during the summer and fall of 2019, which could be the same seasons they’re eyeing for the second installment. It all depends on how soon after the season 1 finale the second season will take place. We’ll be sure to keep you in the loop on any filming updates we find.

Lovecraft Country season 2 release date

Because filming for season 2 has not begun yet, we shouldn’t expect it to come out this year–if it does at all. While it would be great to get new episodes in August just like we did last year, it’s not likely. On top of filming, the first season required a ton of

visual effects

, something we’d assume the second season would need as well. Perhaps we’ll get

Lovecraft Country

season 2 in time for summer 2022. This is all just speculation, though.

Worst case scenario is that

Lovecraft Country

is never officially renewed for season 2, though we’re hopeful that won’t happen. Keep up with us at
