HBO Max seems to be doubling down on its plans for the Caped Crusader and expanding its relationship with The Batman director Matt Reeves in the process.

According to reports, HBO Max and Cartoon Network have ordered a new Batman animated series titled Batman: Caped Crusaders which will be executive produced by Reeves. Not only will the series bring Reeves into the fold for yet another Batman project, but it will also see him partner with the likes of Bruce Timm and J.J. Abrams, who will also be serving as executive producers on the series.

"“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” Reeves and Abrams shared in a joint statement. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”"

The series is said to be a reimagining of the Batman mythology told through state-of-the-art animation techniques with the Caped Crusader’s rogue’s gallery teased to play a significant role in the series.

While there doesn’t appear to be any connection to Reeves’ upcoming Robert Pattinson led film or its HBO Max companion series, the show is sure to garner some major buzz between the pair’s connection to the project and thanks to the fact that it marks Timm’s return to the iconic DC character in animated episodic television.

Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series is still regarded by many as the gold standard of animated superhero series so pairing him up with fellow visionaries in Reeves and Abrams seems like a match made in heaven.

Batman: Caped Crusader release date

At this time, HBO Max has not yet revealed an official release date for Batman: Caped Crusader but it seems likely the earliest the new series could arrive would be the fall of 2021.

One strong likelihood is that HBO Max eye a release date timed to this year’s Batman Day celebrations which are expected to take place on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021. The release of a new Batman animated series would definitely give fans something to look forward to. It’s hard not to imagine launching the show on Batman Day would lend well to the promotion of the show and also set it up for a successful launch.

A September release date would also help to put some space between when The Batman is expected to open in theaters in March 2022.
