It’s hard to believe Game of Thrones came to an end more than two years ago, but what’s even more difficult to believe is that we’re still talking about who left the out-of-place coffee cup on set during “The Last of the Starks.” A small, almost imperceptible error, the cup spurred speculation that lasted long after HBO digitally edited it out.
At the time, the cast and crew pointed fingers at one another, jokingly hinting at who had left the cup behind after long hours of filming. Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen on the show, initially seemed like the obvious choice; after all, the cup was directly in front of the Mother of Dragons during the feast.
But the ensuing debate saw Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Conleth Hill (Lord Varys), and director David Nutter all at one point put forward as possible candidates for who left the cup. Despite the many accusations, no one ever owned up to the gaffe, so the case remains open.
However, Emilia Clarke offered up some new information during a recent interview that could reveal who was actually responsible for bringing coffee to Winterfell.
Emilia Clarke names Game of Thrones showrunner Dan Weiss as the coffee cup culprit
The Game of Thrones coffee cup debacle came up again when Clarke appeared on Texting With, a digital series from theSkimm. “It’s not Starbucks — spoiler,” she said. “I’m going to say it again for the record: was not mine. Looking at you, Dan Weiss.”
Along with David Benioff, Dan Weiss served as showrunner on Game of Thrones for all eight seasons. Have we finally found the beverage enthusiast responsible?
Of course, Clarke is also the one who accused Conleth Hill of leaving the cup behind, begging the question of how true her current accusation is. It’s totally possible the Mother of Dragons was just peeved about Varys betraying her at the time, but at this point, the Game of Thrones cast may just enjoy keeping us guessing.
