Who Are You Really?

Fear the Walking Dead season 6 provided an opportunity for the characters to reveal who they really are. Morgan, who had been living and breathing a pacifist philosophy since leaving Alexandria, realized that you have to make tough decisions — including the decision to kill people — in order to protect what matters most.

June lost her husband after saving Virginia’s life. Virginia knew that Dakota was dangerous and did everything in her power to hide it. After John died, June needed some time to herself after killing Virginia in cold blood, but after connecting with John Dorie Sr. she had a renewed mission to find Teddy and protect her friends. She could have gone off the rails, but she remained true to herself — and to John’s memory — and continued to fight the good fight.

The most fascinating transformation of the season was that of Victor Strand. In season 1, the charming con man made it clear that he was a lone wolf, but he reluctantly allowed the Clarks and the Salazars to come with him on his escape to Mexico. Over time he’s tried to be a good guy, but even when it looks like he’s working for the group he prioritizes Numero Uno. In season 6 he took advantage of the control Virginia gave him and created his own army. When the bombs launched, he took off. Of all the characters, Strand is the one most likely to end up a villain when the opportunity arises.

And then there’s Alicia, the only one in the group whose safety was guaranteed after Teddy locked her in a fallout shelter because he saw her as the face of the future. Alicia has been living in her mother’s shadow since Madison’s loss in season 4. She honors her mother with every decision she makes, and now she has a chance to turn her mother’s vision for the future into a reality, if she can make it out of the bunker alive.

Several characters experienced great transformations in season 6, and now that the season is over their futures lie in the balance as uncertainty takes over.
