Halo — Paramount+ — March 24
Whether it’s Netflix’s breakout success with Arcane or the news of a Fallout television series underway at Amazon, the 2020s feel like feel like they could be a great time for big budget video game adaptations. Lots of video games have great stories, and while movie and TV adaptations of them haven’t always done great in the past, Hollywood is clearly ready to gamble on them now.
The first big video game adaptation of 2022 is Halo. Based on the hugely popular first-person shooter games for the Xbox consoles, Halo follows a genetically altered soldier called the Master Chief as he attempts to stave off the extinction of humankind at the hands of an alliance of alien races called the Covenant. Generally, the way Master Chief does this is by killing everyone with a huge assortments of weapons, defying the odds at every turn. The games had a decent if simple story, so it feels like there’s a lot of room for Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Studios to craft a compelling tale.
Halo stars Paul Schrieber (American Gods) as the Master Chief. His AI companion Cortana is being voiced by Jen Taylor, who also voiced the character in the video games. The cast also includes Natascha McElhone as the scientist who started the program that created super soldiers like the Master Chief, so it’s likely we’re going to be getting some backstory exploration for how this far future space-war came about.
