As we continue to see reboots and revivals for many of the popular shows we grew up with, it wasn’t entirely surprising when it was announced we’d be seeing more of MTV’s Teen Wolf. The supernatural drama ran for six seasons between 2011 and 2017, and was your typical 2010s teen show full of heartthrobs, romance and action. The series amassed a sizable fanbase, one that had been rallying for a reunion of sorts for years after the final season wrapped up.

We learned in February that a revival movie was in the works at Paramount+, and of course, fans immediately needed to know which stars would be returning, if any. And while many were happy to see that a large number of the original cast would be back — including Tyler Posey and Crystal Reed — one name was notably absent. Dylan O’Brien was not mentioned, though Variety reported at the time that more names were expected to be announced at a later date.

O’Brien memorably played Stiles Stilinski on Teen Wolf, Scott McCall’s (Posey) lovable and goofy best friend who falls in love with Lydia Martin (Holland Roden) early on. Stiles remained a fan-favorite throughout the series, and the role made O’Brien a household name.

Why Dylan O’Brien (Stiles Stilinski) won’t be in the Teen Wolf movie

Now, the 30-year-old actor is discussing the upcoming movie, confirming he won’t be in it and shedding some light as to why. Speaking with Variety, O’Brien admitted it was a “difficult decision”:

"The show couldn’t be more dear to me. It was the first thing I ever did I and so many people there are extremely dear to me. It was something I was trying to make work but it all happened very fast. We didn’t really know that it was happening and they kind of just threw it at us a little bit, which is fine because we all love the show. We were trying to figure it out."

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. “Ultimately, I just decided it was left in a really good place for me and I still want to leave it there,” O’Brien continued. “I wish them well and I’m going to watch it the first night it comes out. I hope it f**king kicks ass, but I’m not going to be in it.”

It goes without saying fans are disappointed O’Brien won’t be appearing in the film, but fortunately we can expect a handful of other stars to return. Apart from Posey and Reed, Colton Haynes, Holland Roden, Shelley Hennig, Orny Adams, Dylan Sprayberry, Linden Ashby, JR Bourne, Melissa Ponzio, Ryan Kelley, and Seth Gilliam are all confirmed to star.

The Teen Wolf revival does not have a release date yet.
