Daniel Radcliffe doesn’t want to return to Harry Potter “right now”
As the star of one of the biggest movie franchises of all time, Daniel Radcliffe should just expect by now to always be asked whether or not he’ll ever return to the character of Harry Potter. The role turned him into a household name overnight and he’ll forever be known as the Boy Who Lived, no matter what other parts he plays.
And though we’re not expecting the three main cast members from the movies — Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint — to appear in another Harry Potter film anytime soon, the recently-released Return to Hogwarts reunion special has fans wondering if it could happen someday.
During a new interview with The New York Times, Radcliffe was asked about the possibility of him starring in movie adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a play that picks up with Harry, Ron and Hermione in adulthood. After all, Harry Potter director Christopher Columbus has said he wants to make an adaptation with the original star.
Would Daniel Radcliffe ever return to Harry Potter?
While the 32-year-old actor unfortunately turned down the idea, he did give fans a little glimmer of hope. He’s not interested in returning to the character for a Cursed Child movie, but he has a “never say never” mentality about reprising the role at some point:
"This isn’t the answer that anybody’s going to want, but I think I was so able to go back and enjoy it because it’s not a part of my day-to-day life anymore. I’m getting to a point where I feel like I made it out of Potter OK and I’m really happy with where I am now, and to go back would be such a massive change to my life. I’m never going to say never, but the Star Wars guys had like 30, 40 years before they went back. For me, it’s only been 10. It’s not something I’m really interested in doing right now."
If Radcliffe ever does decide to come back to the Wizarding World, he’ll be in good company. Rupert Grint revealed earlier this year that he would be open to reprising the role of Ron Weasley, explaining to ITV’s Good Morning Britain that he couldn’t think of a reason not to, adding that he’d want Radcliffe and Watson to join him. For Watson’s part, she hasn’t said either way whether she’d come back to Harry Potter, although she said she’d do another reunion.
Diehard fans of Harry Potter would, of course, love to see the main trio of actors reprise their roles at some point in the future. Fingers crossed we actually get it someday.
We can next see Radcliffe in the title role in Weird: The ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Story, which started filming earlier this year and will premiere exclusively on The Roku Channel. He also has a supporting role in the film The Lost City, which just hit theaters.
