Moon Knight is officially over after yesterday’s finale. We got answers to some of our biggest questions, like whether Jake Lockley would ever appear in the show and whether Moon Knight would overcome Arthur Harrow and his goddess patron Ammit. However, there were also plenty of cliffhangers. While it may have seemed like Moon Knight would be a one-season limited series, this is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Is there any real doubt we’ll see characters like Marc Spector and Layla El-Faouly reappear at some point?

Well, there is some doubt; lead star Oscar Isaac only signed on for this one season. But given how successful Moon Knight has been for Disney+, you can bet the studio will do everything it can to convince him to return.

Marvel Studios accidentally hints Moon Knight season 2 is possible

Apparently, the idea that Moon Knight won’t return is so outlandish one that Marvel Studios corrected itself. To tease the upcoming Moon Knight finale, Marvel Studios tweeted, “This Wednesday, experience the epic series finale of Marvel Studios’ #MoonKnight, only on @disneyplus.” Then, less than 20 minutes later, the studio deleted that tweet and put up a new one with the exact same message, except instead of “series finale,” it said “season finale.”

Since the internet is forever, you can see both tweets side-by-side here.

That change was clearly intentional on Marvel’s part. So will we get a season 2 of Moon Knight? Obviously we can’t say anything for sure, but the clues are piling up.

Moon Knight director: “We don’t know if there’s a next season”

Speculation on Marvel’s Twitter aside, director Mohamed Diab weighed with Deadline. “We don’t know if there’s a next season,” he said.

"Marvel doesn’t go with a conventional way, so even if they like the character and want to extend the world, it could be season 2, it could be a standalone film, or he can join another superhero’s journey. I’m kept in the dark, just like the fans."

So just because Moon Knight may not see a second season doesn’t mean we won’t necessarily see Oscar Isaac in the role of Marc/Steven/Jake again. “We never discussed it being a season 2, but one day there’s going to be an expansion, but I don’t know how it’s going to look like,” Diab said.

Moon Knight finale could be “Layla’s beginning”

All that said, there’s more than just Marc Spector on the table. The season finale also saw Layla (May Calamawy) gain her own superpowers by becoming the temporary avatar of the goddess Taweret (Antonia Salib). So while Marc Spector’s story reached a climax for him as Moon Knight, it felt like Layla’s journey as a superhero was just kicking off.

“We kept it open, because this could be Layla’s beginning,” Diab explained. “Having her partner with someone completely different from her, (like) Tawaret, would be so interesting and they can drive each other crazy. Her learning does she need to be a superhero now or not, because she hates the idea right now, or maybe she needs to learn it’s important or not. There’s so much room to go there, I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Wherever the road leads next for Layla and Marc, we’ll be here for it.

All six episodes of Moon Knight season 1 are currently streaming on Disney+. (See what we did there?)

Next. Moon Knight’s finale is just okay. dark
