Horizon Zero Dawn show in development at Netflix

Lately, it’s started looking more and more like video game adaptations are going to be one of the next fronts in the Streaming Wars. Though they’ve historically had a reputation as being pretty awful, lots of studios are betting big on them. From Paramount+’s Halo to Netflix’s Arcane and Resident Evil, the list of new video game shows is ever growing. We were just reporting about the star power that has recently become attached to Peacock’s Twisted Metal series, and already we have a new show to talk about.

Per IGN, Sony president Jim Ryan revealed during the company’s latest investor briefing that they have a few major video game TV projects in the works with various platforms. One of those is the God of War series that Amazon was reportedly eyeing a while back, which is apparently moving forward. God of War is kind of a no-brainer to make the leap to the small screen, especially right now when fantasy and science fiction shows are booming. It’s cinematic, dramatic, and features all sorts of memorable characters and creatures.

Then you have Gran Turismo, a long running series of car racing games that has been in Sony’s stable since the original PlayStation. This is another series the company is looking to develop for the screen, though as of yet there’s no streaming platform attached. A Gran Turismo show makes a little less sense than God of War, but maybe Sony thinks it can compete with The Fast & the Furious or something.

Sony is developing a Horizon Zero Dawn show with Netflix

Perhaps the most exciting thing to come out of Sony’s investor briefing is that the company is also reportedly working with Netflix to develop a show based on the Horizon game series, which currently consists of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. The series follows a fiery young hunter named Aloy as she navigates a post-apocalyptic United States teeming with robotic dinosaurs and disparate human tribes. The games are visually stunning and feature a pretty interesting science fiction story with some great twists.

This is the first time we’re hearing about this Horizon show; it’s not currently known whether it will feature Aloy or a totally new cast of characters. But if Netflix could actually pull off this one, they stand to please an awful lot of fans.

It’s also interesting that Sony has cast so a wide net with its PlayStation-exclusive titles, not putting their eggs in any one streaming basket. The Last of Us is being developed by HBO, Twisted Metal by Peacock, God of War by Amazon, and now Horizon by Netflix. It seems their strategy is to get in with all the streaming companies so that no matter which one emerges victorious, Sony’s PlayStation IPs will be a part of it. A shrewd strategy that is sure to pay off in the long run.
