Despite Sony’s best efforts to convince audiences that it is, in fact, Morbin’ time, the studio’s string of interconnected Spider-Man-adjacent movies has gotten off to a rocky start. Beginning with 2018’s Venom, Sony has been attempting to build out its own cinematic universe starring Spider-Man villains. It’s been a pretty mixed bag. While Venom was a success, the latest Spidey villain movie, Morbius, was an enormous flop critically and financially, bringing in just $163 million worldwide and spawning endless waves of mockery across the Internet.

Not everything Sony has touched in the Spider-Man realm has turned to crap. The studio co-produces the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies with Marvel Studios. The latest of those, Spider-Man: No Way Home, is one of the highest grossing films of all time and arguably the strongest release of Marvel’s Phase Four to date. As such, Sony has a pretty good relationship with Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige. Considering that Feige is the architect behind the most successful cinematic franchise of all time, he’s a pretty good person to have in your corner.

Kevin Feige warned Sony not to “get too ahead of itself”

According to a recent report from The Ankler, Kevin Feige has given Sony some advice about creating their own cinematic universe, complete with a few words of warning.

“And yes, Marvel’s Kevin Feige does weigh in and offer notes on Sony’s Marvel movies that don’t feature Spider-Man,” the report reads. “One insider credits Feige for guiding Sony’s approach and warning the studio not to get too ahead of itself in terms of building some larger universe in the vein of the Avengers movies.”

While this is some sage wisdom, it doesn’t seem like Sony has followed it. Morbius contained a shaky plotline that tried to tie things back to the MCU by bringing Michael Keaton’s Vulture into the Sony-verse, but it wasn’t executed very well. And they’re powering full steam ahead with a slew of other movies, including Kraven the HunterEl Muerto, Madame Weband Venom 3. They are also reportedly talks to do another trilogy of Spider-Man films featuring Tom Holland, though nothing has been officially announced. And let’s not forget the two animated Into the Spiderverse sequels that are on the way.

If that’s not getting ahead of yourself, I’m not sure what is.

The next movie in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is Kraven the Hunter, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular big game hunter. It’s expected to hit theaters on January 13, 2023.
